Workshop 1, 2017 – Be the Change Youth Leadership Series
Workshop 1 for ‘Be the Change 2017’ was held at Monash University on Sunday 26th March. In its third
year, workshop 1 attracted a record number of youth interested in developing their leadership skills.
‘Be the Change’ is a series of youth leadership workshops for 12-17 year olds. In partnership with the
Victorian state government, the series was coordinated by Hindu Youth Australia and VHP Victoria.
The theme for 2017 is ‘Skills into Practice’, giving attendees a chance to practice the skills they have
developed over the last 2 years in ‘real life’ contexts amongst their peers and with feedback from
workshop facilitators.
The morning started with a brief review of leadership and leadership styles. There was appreciation that
leaders don’t need to be on the international stage, nor do they need to be prominent in the media.
Examples of significant local leadership within homes, families, in communities, schools and workplaces
were discussed.
This provided an ideal segue into identifying and understanding issues and its role in effective leadership
at every level of society. Students worked in groups and were impressive in their ability to stratify issues
that affected their school, suburb, local community, state, nation and the world.
Throughout the morning, students could practice their speaking and listening skills. Teamwork was
fostered throughout the various activities during the workshop.
All students were provided with workshop manuals and take-home activities to further develop
essential skills that are applicable in all aspects of their lives.
HYA is committed to provide support to youth in their career planning, skill development as well as
involving their parents’ in understanding the cultural and generational issues.
The 2017 workshop series promises to be exciting and challenging for students, allowing them to further
develop key leadership skills.
The second workshop is scheduled for Sunday, 25th June 2017. Attendance is by pre-registration only
and to register your interest email vhpvic@gmail.com or hya@vhp.org.au with details of student name
