‘Be the Change’ Parents Workshop 3, 2017
The third session of parents’ workshop was welcomed by parents and evoked a good response from all participants. It was a continuation of our concept of providing a platform that engages the parents and VHP team to share and learn parenting skills mutually. This was held at Monash University on Sunday the 24th of September 2017.
Coordinated by VHP Victoria, ‘Be the Change’ Parents Workshop is a series of parenting forum workshops for parents of 12-17 year olds. The objective of this series is to connect parents and share effective parenting strategies. Furthermore, workshop 3 focused on identifying the leader in your child.
The forum started with a VHP speaker reviewing the points of the previous session which was focused on Cyberbullying and Health in Leadership. The topic for this session was ‘Leader of a Leader-To-Be’. In the introduction, participants were asked to form pairs, ask each other’s names and then at least one good quality. Each partner then introduced the other elaborating on the good quality. This exercise was an icebreaker and a way of focusing on the positive aspect of a human.
Simple points like What is a leader, is it important to be one, how can that be achieved, how can we be the leader of a leader to be, where are we correct, room for improvement was touched upon. All this was done with interaction from the parents who contributed their views in a constructive environment.
A video by Robin Sharma was viewed by all of us on Growing Great Kids. Five tips were shared, and parents narrated real life incidents on how they saw those tips useful. The tips were on being a good example, how excessive help harms, educating on our roots, help them find their passion and motivate them to reach the pinnacle. These tips brought in a very good flow of ideas which was enjoyed by all participants.
A guest speaker, youth leader, and recent graduate Priya Agarwal shared her journey and passion from primary school to her current achievements. She shared her family values and how her parents helped shape her into a better person. Parents took with them actionable tasks which could be practically applied in day to day life.
VHP Victoria is committed to creating flourishing families with parents being role models in today’s society and nurturing the potential in their children with their strong cultural values.
